Installation at Satellite Artfair, 2019

Mueller created an all-encompassing environment for the main protagonists, the Twisted Twins. One enters the constructed space through sheer fabric panels, featuring each twin in an identical pose, leaning against a wall in a dilapidated room, mirroring each other. Their backs are facing the viewer but imply the impression of guardians one has to pass to enter.

Inside the structure, a soundscape evenly hovers in the space, a mix of breathing, creaky wood, and other subtle frequencies transport the viewer into another realm. On a black distressed canvas wall resides a heavy monolithic image of the twins embracing each other, standing in a tunnel-like decrepit hallway, printed directly on wood and framed in a unique frame made of reclaimed wood dimly lit by the only light source other than the videos. When standing close to the wood piece, a harmonious sound sequence can be heard coming from a separate speaker above. 

Each side wall is entirely taken up by a slow video morph loop projection on distressed natural-colored canvas. The video loops are identical, showing a twin curled up on a table in a desolate space. The only movement in the video is an ever-so-slight back and forth of an arm and the expansion and contraction of the back in sync with the breathing sound. the rest seems still, but in fact, one twin's body keeps continuously morphing into the other twin’s body in an endless cycle. One sees muscles, ribs, and tendons getting more sculpted and then taking on a softer form again. A canvas rectangle with frayed edges is safety-pinned onto the large wall panel where the body is resting on the table. The side canvasses are hanging free from the top to allow slight movement in the natural flow of air, adding another “real life” layer of movement to the morph.

In the center of the space stands a pillar made of distressed wood, looking it could be well over 100 years old, serving as a contrasting frame for a fast looping, jittery video in which the twins engage sexually, accompanied by a hectic sawing soundtrack, hinting to the comical feel of the silent movies.

The visitor is encouraged to spend time with each of the different elements and feel the different vibrations it creates, and acknowledge the thoughts, feelings, and associations that are coming up.
