GenderFuck, 2017
Non-binary artist Eva Mueller has long been captivated by the concept of androgyny, a fascination that has, in turn, prompted them to embark on an introspective journey questioning their own gender identity. Mueller’s portrait series GenderFuck is not merely an exploration; it is an audacious invitation to reimagine and reflect upon our perceptions of gender. GenderFuck emerges as a powerful catalyst for provoking contemplation within viewers. The deliberate ambiguity surrounding the gender of each subject compels us to think of other possibilities beyond the binary constraints of Western society.
Mueller encouraged each sitter to express themselves in the most ambiguous manner possible, intentionally crafting an atmosphere of confusion. In this ambiguity, they find liberation—an undefined space where the boundaries of possibility expand limitlessly.
In the realm of GenderFuck, both the subject and viewer are unburdened by predefined expectations, free to choose their own paths and embrace the fluidity of human existence. This series is a testament to the power of art to provoke thought, challenge preconceptions, and celebrate the beauty of diversity in all its forms. Mueller's work is a bold testament to the transformative potential of art, encouraging us to explore the infinite nuances of our own identities while embracing the freedom to defy convention.
GenderFuck was presented in April 2017 at the Soho Project Space, New York City.
